Install the Barcode app, configure barcode nomenclature on products and locations, and assign barcode-enabled operation types for receipts, pickings, and inventory counts. Use GS1 rules if needed, connect scanners as keyboard wedges or the mobile Barcode client, and test stock.barcode flows for lot-tracked and packaged products before go-live.
Steps
- Install inventory_barcode (Enterprise) or community barcode modules if applicable; open Inventory → Barcode.
- Set barcode on product.product, packaging, and stock.location records.
- Configure barcode rules under Inventory → Configuration → Barcode Nomenclatures.
- Enable Barcode on stock.picking.type for receipts, pick, pack, and internal transfers.
- For lots, scan product then lot barcode or use GS1 embedded AI fields on labels.
- Run cycle counts from Barcode → Inventory Adjustments with location scans.
- Train users on the mobile PWA or rugged devices; lock desktop validate for warehouse groups.
Common mistakes
- Duplicate barcodes across product variants.
- Missing location barcodes causing default wrong bins.
- Not enabling lot prompts on tracked SKUs in barcode options.
- Using warehouse validate on desktop while barcode workflow is mandatory.
- Skipping wireless network coverage tests on shop floor.
Odoo version notes
Native Barcode is Enterprise in Odoo 16–18; Community often uses OCA barcode or third-party clients on the same stock models. Odoo 17 refreshed the Barcode UI; retest custom JS modules. GS1 nomenclature is shared across versions—export rules when cloning databases between 16 and 18.
