How do I set up multi-company in Odoo?

Enable multi-company under Settings → Companies, create res.company records sharing or isolating chart of accounts, and assign users allowed_company_ids. Configure inter-company rules for SO/PO automation, align product and partner records with company-dependent properties, and set defaults on warehouses, journals, and fiscal positions per company to prevent cross-company stock or posting errors.

Steps

  1. Settings → Users & Companies → Companies: create child companies with currency and chart.
  2. Grant users access to multiple companies; set default company on res.users.
  3. Enable inter-company transactions module for automatic SO/PO between companies if needed.
  4. Set company-specific fiscal positions, taxes, and banks on each res.company.
  5. Duplicate or share products; set company_dependent fields on accounts and prices.
  6. Assign warehouses and picking types per company; avoid shared stock locations without rules.
  7. Test a purchase in Company A selling to Company B with consolidated reporting filters.

Common mistakes

  • Users posting in wrong active company on navbar switch.
  • Shared vendors without company-specific payable accounts.
  • Inter-company SO without mirrored PO causing inventory imbalance.
  • One warehouse used by two companies on quants.
  • Consolidation attempted without elimination journals documented.

Odoo version notes

Multi-company is built into Community and Enterprise 16–18. Enterprise inter-company is smoother for SO/PO sync. Odoo 17 refined company switcher UX. Consolidation reporting may need accounting localization or BI export. On Odoo.sh, each company still shares one database—plan record rules carefully.

FAQ

Follow-up questions

Can companies share products?
Yes—products can be multi-company with company-specific taxes and accounts on properties.
How is stock separated?
Locations and warehouses should be company-specific; quants carry company_id on moves.
What about single sign-on?
Same user login can access allowed companies; permissions use groups plus record rules.
