Choose Enterprise when you need official mobile barcode, advanced accounting localizations, MRP PLM, quality on manufacturing, sign, and vendor-supported upgrades with Odoo.sh options. Community fits budget-conscious teams with technical capacity for OCA modules and self-managed hosting, accepting more integration labor for barcode, payroll bridges, and support. Compare total cost including developers, not license line alone.
Steps
- List must-have apps: barcode, quality, payroll, helpdesk, marketing automation.
- Check OCA alternatives for Community gaps and maintenance status on your version.
- Model five-year cost: licenses, hosting, partner support, and internal dev time.
- Evaluate compliance needs: audit trails, electronic sign, and upgrade path.
- Pilot both editions in staging with one critical workflow (pick-pack-ship or MO).
- Review user count pricing and enterprise modules included per user.
- Decide hosting: Odoo.sh Enterprise, on-prem, or Community on cloud VM.
Common mistakes
- Picking Community then buying unofficial barcode apps with poor support.
- Enterprise license without budget for implementation partner.
- Ignoring that some localizations are Enterprise-only in your country.
- Counting portal users as full seats incorrectly.
- Switching editions mid-year without data migration plan for enterprise-only fields.
Odoo version notes
Odoo 16–18 Enterprise adds apps not in Community source tree. Community AGPL requires offering source if you distribute modifications. Hybrid approaches (Community core plus paid apps) are fragile—pick a lane per major version. Upgrade from Community to Enterprise is supported but plan module installs on cutover.
When to bring in help
